How to Receive Feedback from Each DiSC Style

Last time we shared tips on how to be a master at giving feedback to colleagues and fellow team members. Today we focus on the other side of feedback – receiving it.

Great teams know that receiving feedback is critical to improving performance. Why? Feedback brings awareness to our blind spots - those unrecognized weaknesses that threaten to hinder progress.

But receiving feedback isn’t always easy, especially if the sender has a DiSC style different than ours. These style differences will show up in how the feedback is presented to us, which can stir up personal fears and insecurities for each style. That’s where knowledge of DiSC is a huge help!

Use these tips to better understand how to respond to feedback from the four primary DiSC styles.

RECEIVING FEEDBACK FROM THE D-STYLE

The secret? Focus on results.

  • Remain business-like.

  • Accept their bluntness. They aren’t trying to be rude.

  • Ask “what” questions to get at specifics - What exact change is needed? What do you mean? Can you give an example?

  • Show your desire to achieve results.

  • Provide examples of changes made as a result of their feedback.

RECEIVING FEEDBACK FROM THE i-STYLE

The secret? Focus on the positives.

  • Show enthusiasm for hearing their suggestions and observations.

  • Ask “who” questions - Who will this help? Who will be affected?

  • Be informal, casual and ready to brainstorm ideas.

  • Show that you understand their interests and needs and express your own.

  • Thank them for their responses.

RECEIVING FEEDBACK FROM THE S-STYLE

The secret? Focus on stability and the relationship.

  • Be methodical and respectful.

  • Ask “how” questions - How could this be improved? How do you see this differently? How can we meet the deadline next time?

  • Probe for additional task-related specifics or other concerns.

  • Ask if you can follow up with them later about changes you are making.

  • Show sincere appreciation for the feedback.

RECEIVING FEEDBACK FROM THE C-STYLE

The secret? Focus on quality and higher standards.

  • Be business-like and respect their knowledge and expertise.

  • Ask “why” questions - Why do you think this is wrong? Why do you think a change is needed? Why will that help achieve our goal?

  • Offer options and discuss the pros and cons of each.

  • Be prepared to back up your choices with logic.

  • Summarize verbal feedback in writing.

Once you have a better understanding of how each DiSC style prefers feedback, then the path to positive chemistry becomes much easier to navigate.
